Meetup and Route
We will meet at 9:00 am at the Gem Stop gas station at the corner of Highway 55 and Highway 95 (5644 Buntrock Rd. Marsing, ID). We will be taking Highway 95 south into Oregon and then turning right on Succor Creek Rd into the Succor Creek Natural Area. You can follow the caravan to the fossil site.
All are welcome! The site is down a dirt road with no facilities. Higher-clearance vehicles may be driven right onto the fossil hill, or cars can park below the hill with a short walk. This means that all abilities can enjoy this field trip! Fossils are found on a steep hillside or on a flat plateau above.
Trip Details
We will go over to Succor Creek Natural Area into Oregon and collect leaf fossils from Lake Idaho sediments. This is typically a half-day adventure. We will learn about how the flood events and post-flood lake drainage has preserved and revealed these incredibly preserved leaves. You will learn how the nearby Leslie Gulch canyons give us clues to how these fossils are so well preserved. After a short presentation you can search the hillside for and collect fossil leaves!
What to Bring
- Camp chairs, if desired
- A sack lunch
- Plenty of water
- Sun protection
- Long pants (if you want to forage a little farther afield)
- Sturdy shoes
- Work gloves, shovels (if you want a better chance to find a good fossil!)
There will be a requested donation to support FIGI of $5.00 per individual or $20.00 per family. You may pay via cash, check, or Venmo.
