Owyhee River

Join Foundations in Genesis Idaho on an adventure along the beautiful Owyhee River outside of Adrian, Oregon! This will be a half-day trip full of gorgeous scenery!

When: 9:00am

Where:

We will gather at the community park and then travel caravan-style to our first stop along the scenic Owyhee River! We are expecting to be done by 12:00pm. You can leave at your leisure.

Just as we enter the Owyhee River “canyon” we will stop at the Watchable Wildlife Area to observe the beautiful cliffs and see if there is any wildlife to watch! We may see some birds and lizards, such as the Western Fence Lizard (below). There is a large gravel parking lot here, so there should be plenty of space for all of the vehicles!

There is a beautiful stretch of the Owyhee River that has these colorful cliffs as a backdrop! There is even a small rock arch in one of the cliffs!! We will stop here to talk about some of the geologic processes that could have formed these cliffs.

Set back from the Owyhee River is a short canyon full of rocks, some wildlife, and a small creek! There could be lizards here, such as the Nevada Side-blotched Lizard (below). The road through Tunnel Canyon is dirt/gravel, but it has been traveled on successfully in a Prius!

We will end the official field trip at the Lake Owyhee Dam, but you are welcome to continue exploring on your own! The road beyond the dam is narrow and winding, but there are some cool views of Lake Owyhee and the campgrounds along the shore!

Please bring the following items if you have them:

  • Water
  • Sack Lunch (if you want to stay and explore after the trip)
  • Warm clothing (layers)
  • Close-toed shoes and long pants
  • Binoculars/cameras

There is an outhouse at the first stop.

A donation of $5 per person is recommended, or a maximum of $20 per family.
